What Are Those Black Streaks on My Roof?

The black streaking that people see on the north-facing sides of their roof is actually a bacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma, which feeds off the materials in the shingles. Not only is it unsightly, but overtime, it can cause damage to the shingles and roof. These black streaks are the precursors to lichen/moss growth.
